French settees, known as "canapé" in French, evolved from early prototypes like double chairs with padded seats and arms in the 17th century. By the 18th and 19th centuries, they had become staples in salons and parlors. This circa 1900 example features an ebonized carved wood frame with cabriole legs, curved arms with upholstered elbow rests, and classic plaid fabric. Light wear consistent with age.
